Climate Change in Our Community

Project Description

Situation

El Puente, a community human rights institution in Brooklyn, New York has spent decades using art, science, and community engagement to educate and advocate for the health and wellness people in the Williamsburg and Bushwick neighborhoods. As an organization at the forefront of environmental justice issues and with staff and partnerships spanning to Puerto Rico, El Puente requested assistance in building capacity around embedding climate change impacts and solutions into their outreach efforts.

Solution

With funding from EPA, Skeo conducted background research on local climate changes impacts and model climate solutions at the local, state and national level. This research formed the basis of an outreach and facilitator’s booklet on climate change to guide El Puente’s program development.

Outcome

Skeo developed an English and Spanish version booklet, “Climate Change in Our Community” with visually appealing graphics and informative text on local effects of climate change for flooding, health and household expenses, local sources of carbon pollution and progress towards reductions by New York City and state governments. An important piece for El Puente was a section on the actions individuals and communities can take to reduce climate change impacts. During the development of the booklet, Skeo facilitated a capacity building workshop with El Puente to provide additional support on how staff could use the workshop and to build a deeper understanding of the effects of climate change on people’s livelihoods.
